Judgement Day is Upon Us!

Or so some people may have you believe. According to Harold Camping, the rapture is supposed to happen on May 21, 2011. Well, other people have predicted the same thing over and over. Apparently no one has gotten it right so far. And there is good reason to say that , too.

Matthew 24:23, 27- “Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not….For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

Matthew 24:36 – “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

So even Christ said that no one knows, not even Christ Himself. That brings a bit of comfort.
“But Shawn,” you say, “you’re a Mormon. Didn’t Joseph Smith prophecy the Second Coming?” Well, in a sense.

Doctrine and Covenants 130:15- “Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter.”

Interesting read, that one. Well, there is a good explanation for it, too. Joseph Smith really wanted to know when the Second Coming was going to be. I think most of us do, or are at least a little curious. So Joseph did what he had done many times before–he asked God. Not getting an answer, he asked again. And kept asking and asking. Now Heavenly Father is a great Father. The best in the universe. He knows us better than we know ourselves. he knows the end fro-m the beginning. Joseph was allowing his curiosity to interfere with the work of the Lord. So heavenly Father gave him an answer. If Joseph lived to be 85 he would see the Second coming. That places the Second Coming in 1890. Well, it’s 2011 now. So I think he was off a bit. Or not really.
God knew that Joseph was going to be martyred. He knew that He needed to get Joseph working again. I have little doubt that if Joseph had lived and not gone to Carthage (remember, it was by choice that he went to prison) that this would have happened. But as is often the case, the machinations of man cause plans to change. Just look at the temple in Adam-ondi-Ahman. The temple was going to be built, but people got in the way and it was never built, but will be built some day.
So we have all these people making all these predictions. Heck, there’s a ton of info on Wikipedia about the end times. Needless to say, there is more than a few things that need to happen before the Second Coming. I look forward to the day myself. I hope I am ready for it.
